Technology

No profession has been more impacted by technology in recent years than the practice of law. At Powers Chapman we have made the commitment to incorporate the latest technology into our practice in order to better serve our valued clients. Below are just a few of the impressive hardware devices and software programs we incorporate into our practice:

  • Lexis/NexisLexis/Nexis On-Line legal Research — We subscribe to the Lexis/Nexis computer-based research system which gives every attorney instant access to a dizzying array of legal research tools from across the country and around the world. Cases, statutes, ordinances, law reviews and legal treatises are all available on-line to provide cutting edge research tools instantly accessible.
  • State of the Art Computer Network — Powers Chapman has also made a long-term commitment to a sophisticated computer network. Each attorney and staff member has a computer workstation which is, in turn, linked to a high speed network of servers which handle file storage, data backups, e-mail and internet access. Each attorney, legal assistant and staff member utilizes the latest productivity and communication software (Microsoft Office Suite comprised of Word, Excel, Outlook). We also have fully integrated network scanners, digital fax and color printers.
  • E-Newsletters, The Powers Chapman Blog, New Website, Podcasts and Webcasts — To provide more information to our current and potential clients, our firm has moved forward into the “new” media. Powers Chapman has had a web presence for most of the last decade, but we are moving beyond the website into new areas. In August Powers Chapman launched “Law & Argument”, a blog on all things legal. We have also begun publishing an e-newsletter to our PPLS members. More electronic publications will follow. Webcasts and podcasts on important legal developments are in the planning phases as well.
  • Panasonic DVC30 Camcorder and Fujifilm FinePix S6000FDVideo & Graphic Capabilities — Much of the business of law, particularly in the personal injury and litigation specialties, is about telling stories—our clients’ stories. In order to portray our client’s cases in the most compelling way, we have invested heavily in state-of-the art video equipment and high-end video editing software. We currently have a Panasonic DV Proline AG-Dvc30, 3-chip camcorder for videotaping everything from client injuries to video wills to accident scenes. We also have sophisticated video editing software called Vegas 6 to edit video, still images, music and sound into compelling presentations for trial, arbitration or other purposes. We can also burn the video to DVD for distribution. High resolution color printers complete the package, allowing us to present our clients cases in vivid, eye catching color.
  • Trial Presentation Hardware & Software — Like other areas of law, trial practice has also been impacted by advances in software and hardware. In our litigation practice we utilize sophisticated software, called Trial Director v5.1, to present video testimony, photos and documents to judges and juries using a high-speed laptop and LCD projector. Documents, medical records, x-rays, photos and trial exhibits are digitized and stored on the laptop for presentation at trial. Documents and photos can be edited and highlighted on the fly to maximize the impact on the audience, judge or jury.

These are just a few of the advances in technology we have embraced at Powers Chapman. In addition to these technological marvels currently in use, we are constantly on the lookout for new advances in computers, software and hardware to help us work smarter, faster, and more efficiently and to help us present our clients’ cases in the most compelling way possible.
